A funeral procession for Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei drew tens of thousands of state-orchestrated mourners into Tehran on Monday, as chants of “Death to Trump” filled the streets even while the country negotiates a permanent end to the war. Simultaneously, US President Donald Trump issued an ultimatum, warning that if no deal is reached, Washington will “finish the job.”

The flag-draped coffins of Khamenei and his family—killed in the February 28 US-Israeli airstrike that ignited the conflict—were carried on a truck decorated to resemble an imam’s shrine. Revolutionary Guard General Hasan Hasanzsdeh, who is overseeing the 12-hour cortege from the capital to Mehrabad International Airport, said the coffins will be taken through the streets of Tehran on a 12-hour journey to the airport.

Iran’s theocracy has leveraged the funeral as a display of popular legitimacy while engaging in US-mediated talks to halt the West Asian war. Trump’s threat, delivered as the procession unfolded, underscored the fragility of the diplomatic track.
