The BGB singled out a specific incident in the southwestern district of Jhenaidah, alleging that personnel from India’s Border Security Force (BSF) opened a border gate and used a prison van to try to move 30 to 35 people onto Bangladeshi territory before being forced to retreat. Bangladesh officials, rights groups and analysts describe such actions as "push-ins," informal transfers that bypass formal verification and repatriation procedures. India’s BSF and Ministry of External Affairs did not respond to requests for comment.
The friction complicates efforts to reset ties after the 2024 removal of Sheikh Hasina, Bangladesh’s long-serving prime minister who maintained close alignment with New Delhi. India’s ruling Bharatiya Janata Party, which governs the border states of Tripura, West Bengal and Assam, has prioritised tackling undocumented migration and since last year has been trying to push Bengali-speaking Muslims branded "illegal infiltrators" into Bangladesh.
