US President Donald Trump announced the cancellation of a planned large-scale military attack against Iran, asserting that the parties have reached an agreement on the ‘perimeters of a deal.’ This announcement was made on his Truth Social platform late Saturday, following reports that the US and Israel were preparing for strikes on Iran’s energy infrastructure, according to aljazeera.com.

Trump’s decision to hold off on military action came after receiving requests from Iran and other Middle Eastern nations to ‘hold off any attack in that the perimeters of a deal has been agreed to.’ He agreed to this condition with the stipulation that the deal be concluded promptly. The president indicated that the agreement would result in the ‘Immediate, Complete, and Total OPENING OF THE HORMUZ STRAIT’ and would put an end to what he referred to as ‘Iran’s nuclear threat.’

There was no immediate reaction from Tehran. However, earlier on Saturday, Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi communicated to his Saudi counterpart that any attack by the US or Israel would be met with a ‘proportionate response.’

Axios reported that Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman had contacted Trump on Saturday, urging him to cancel the strikes and to return to the negotiation table, as relayed by a source familiar with the matter. Trump had previously stated on Friday that the US would hit Iran ‘very hard.’

In response to the escalating tensions, the US Department of State issued security alerts for Americans in 10 countries across the region, advising them to exercise caution and consider departing the area.
