Guatemala has sent a record delegation of 480 athletes to the XXV Central American and Caribbean Games, currently underway in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, from July 24 to August 8, according to telesurenglish.net.

The delegation, composed of 213 women and 267 men, is the largest in Guatemala’s history in these regional games, surpassing previous records of 416 athletes in Mayagüez 2010 and 428 in Barranquilla 2018. Guatemalan athletes will compete in 38 of the 40 sports on the program.

Leading the delegation are Guatemala’s three Olympic medalists: Adriana Ruano, Jean Pierre Brol, and Erick Barrondo. Ruano, the country’s only Olympic gold medalist, won the women’s trap shooting event at the 2024 Paris Olympics, setting an Olympic record. Brol earned bronze in the men’s trap shooting in Paris 2024. Race walker Barrondo won silver in the 20-kilometer event at London 2012, becoming Guatemala’s first Olympic medalist.

Also notable is badminton player Kevin Cordón, who holds the national record of eight gold medals in these games. The official flag bearers are taekwondo world number one Alejandra Higueros and swimmer Erick Gordillo, a triple gold medalist at the 2013 San Salvador edition.

The Guatemalan Olympic Committee (COG) confirmed that this historic delegation aims to excel in one of the main events of the Olympic cycle.
